Finland checking thousands of foreign students’ residence permits
The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) says it wants to ensure that students still meet the requirements for residence permits they have already been issued. The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) is considering canceling the residence permits of hundreds of foreign students. By the end of September this year, Migri had canceled 264 permits, while 216 cases are still pending.
According to Miia Mattila, from the agency’s monitoring unit, Migri carried out automated reviews on a total of 5,795 residence permits over 12 months up to September of this year.
The checks resulted in suspicions that the conditions of some of the permits were no longer being fulfilled.
The agency began automated reviews of issued residence permits in September 2023. Before that, officials checked students’ residence requirements only when they applied to extend their permits.
In principle, according to Migri, student residence permits issued for a period of more than six months are subject to review, with the first check occurring three months after being issued.
After that, permits will be checked annually as long as they are valid.
